Characters are what people say about what you do as well as what you do not do. Character development is the use of various techniques to create and portray a character .An author can either decide to write a character driven story or a plot driven story. The difference between character driven novels and plot driven novels is that the character driven stories are based on something or someone mostly in a protagonist manner while the plot driven stories are based on the literal or figurative view of the world. In every character driven story there will always be the need for character development.


Writing novel require the writer to posses various writing skills one of them being character development. Although some of the fictional writers do not write character based books but rather a plot of events, character based books are of more interest to the readers if properly developed. Many writers are afraid of character based books because they think it is difficult to write. However with a few skills and knowledge about character development most people can be able to write a fictional book or a play.


Character development helps to keep tension high hence the reader wants to read more. There are three major methods that writers can use in character development:

The objective method involves creating a character with regard to their external qualities such as movement, speech, and mannerism. A fictional writer can use these external qualities to create an illusion character that the readers can be able to judge the character from them.


The subjective method method generally uses the internal qualities to create a character. The writer can use the felling or thoughts to portray a character. For beginners, it would be very difficult to create a character using this method. The method is also very time consuming.


The blended method also exists. It entails combining both the objective method and the subjective method to come up with a character for a play or novel. Using both methods makes the story more interesting as it is very flexible and inventive.


When writing a character driven story, it is important for you to know that creating a character with weaknesses. Imperfections, quirks and vices make the fictional character seem real and more appealing. In most cases, it is good to write a story where the fictional character is able to overcome their weaknesses such as lack of courage and guilt.
